FERTILITY: 5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Antsaw83: FERTILITY: 5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

In my case, I wish that someone had said, ‘You might not want a kid in your 20s, but there might be a time later on when you do, so think about how to prepare yourself for that.’ For instance, now, young women have so many more tools at their disposal. There is so much more information out there they can seek. They just don’t know where to start.

No one is telling you to go to this site and look at these fertility charts. And, they’re not telling you that you might want to think about freezing your eggs while they’re in their optimal quality. By the time you get to your 30s, that quality starts to decline, so maybe you want to freeze them in your 20s so you have more options later on. Egg freezing isn’t a guarantee. It might not work out because you’ll be relying on reproductive science because you won’t be doing it naturally. It’s important for people to have open conversations with their partner because both members of a couple should not feel like they’re alone in their pursuit [of having children]. And, they shouldn’t feel like their partner is just going along with their pursuit; it should be a mutual decision. I think you can learn a lot about who you’re with by having these conversations. I think too often couples suffer when they struggle to have a child because they haven’t thought proactively about the impact that pursuit might have on their relationship. They’re kind of winging it, saying it’ll either work out or it won’t.

But, it takes a big psychological toll when it doesn’t work out. So, I’ve seen so many relationships, including mine, that fell apart during that pursuit of parenthood, and I often wonder, “Are there ways we could have prevented those minefields by talking in advance about what we really wanted and what we were willing to go through, instead of dealing with it in the moment?” There are some times when it’s very good to wing it and be in the moment, but then there are other times — when the psychological toll is great — that it’s better to be prepared in advance.”

5. CHECK YOUR INSURANCE.

“Make sure you have good health insurance, and be aware of the policies surrounding fertility and reproduction where you live and work. Insurance is such a quagmire, and it really varies state-to-state and policy-to-policy. But typically, unless you’ve been diagnosed with infertility (which was the case in my situation), [fertility] tests are often considered elective.

IVF costs $10,000 to $20,000 per cycle, and when you consider that it takes multiple cycles, [it can be several times that amount]. If you live in one of the 15 states that mandates infertility coverage, it’s likely that your IVF treatments will be covered. But, there are limitations on the amount of IVF cycles you can do and the amount of time in which you can do them. Like, you can only do a certain amount of cycles within a certain time period. It’s not easy to figure out. And, it’s not only the financial cost, but the emotional cost.

ARE YOU TRYING TO GET PREGNANT ON CLOMID?

Clomid is one of the most popular infertility treatments available. It works by inducing ovulation, which can be a major help in trying to conceive for women who have irregular menstruation. If you’re taking Clomid the following tips can help make the most of the increased chances of get pregnant quickly.

USE OVULATION TESTS

Clomid makes your ovulation cycle more regular, but we advise not depending on it entirely. Using an ovulation predictor to determine exactly when you’re ovulating is a great idea. Start using the predictor on day 10 of your cycle (7 days after taking Clomid). You can also use temperature checking or another method that works for you. The goal is to narrow down when you’re ovulating as accurately as possible to find your most fertile days to focus your conception efforts.

HAVE SEX FREQUENTLY, BUT NOT TOO FREQUENTLY

When you’re taking Clomid starting on day 3 of your cycle, your fertility window is typically between days 7 through 16 of your cycle. You want to be having sex regularly throughout those days, but that doesn’t necessarily mean having sex every day. A high sperm count is just as important as ovulation when trying to conceive. Having sex too often can deplete a man’s supply. As a general rule, aim to have sex every other day. The exception is when you’re ovulating. Use your ovulation predictor, and when it says you’re ovulating, have sex two days in a row. That way, you can maximize your window.

CONSIDER OTHER OPTIONS

Remember that Clomid is only meant for women who have irregular or failed ovulation. If you and your partner have other fertility problems, Clomid may not be able to fix them. Most people who get pregnant using Clomid conceive within their first three or four cycles. If Clomid isn’t working for you, talk to your doctor about other potential infertility treatments.

USE A SPERM FRIENDLY LUBRICANT

Antsaw83: THE BEST SEX POSITIONS TO CONCEIVE

It’s a long-standing debate: can your sex position make a difference in how likely you are to conceive? The bottom line is that it’s possible to get pregnant in any position.

Sperm can travel into the fallopian tubes from any angle, even when the woman is on top. Some studies, however, have found that a couple of positions can help to maximize the amount of sperm that enter through the cervix.

MISSIONARY POSITION

Missionary is the tried-and- true standard for trying to conceive. The position enables deep penetration, and the woman being on her back tilts the vagina down towards the cervix. This can make it easier for sperm to enter the uterus.

DOGGY STYLE

Doggy style is an ideal position for deep penetration, placing sperm as close as possible to the cervix. Other positions in which the man enters from behind, such as spooning or the woman laying on her stomach, also allow this kind of penetration.

POSITIONS TO AVOID

The goal in choosing a sex position is to maximize the amount of sperm that can enter the uterus. Let gravity work for you by avoiding sex standing up, sitting, or with the woman on top. These positions can definitely still result in a pregnancy, but they may reduce the number of sperm that make it to the finish line.

A CAVEAT

While missionary and doggy style may be the best positions for maximizing sperm entry, there are other factors to consider. Regardless of position, it’s most important that you have sex regularly, particularly leading up to ovulation. You should make sure that you and your partner are having fun and feeling relaxed as much as possible. If changing up your positions helps with that, it’s worthwhile, even if that means trying out something that’s not on this list.
